Abia State Government To Abolish Street Trading



The government of Abia State has announced that the activities of street trading by the roadside will soon be banned in the state because it is causing the administration huge revenue loss and defacing the city centres.

The Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Kate Nwosu, made this revelation yesterday, adding that a bill to criminalize and make illegal street trading and hawking is presently at the State House of Assembly for passing.

She stressed that the bill would ensure that anybody caught selling on the street would be prosecuted and tried in the mobile court when it is passed into law.

Abia State is joining its counterpart Lagos State is prohibiting street hawking and trading, it would be recalled that the LASG on the 1st of July, this year made selling goods on the streets illegal.

Meanwhile, those selling perishables like vegetables, fruits amongst others have been advised by the government to quickly relocate to a neighborhood market close to them because the administration would not condole any excuse from any defaulters as soon as the bill is passed into law.
