Paul Aigbogun’s men were dumped out of the Caf Champions League after losing to the White Knights in Cairo
Enyimba have crashed out of the Caf Champions League following a 1-0 defeat to Zamalek at the Petro Sport Stadium in Cairo on Monday.
Bassem Morsy’s second half strike from the spot handed Mohammed Helmy’s side the maximum points to advance at the expense of the toothless People’s Elephants.
The visitors were rock solid defensively as keeper Theophilus Afelokhai showed class in helping Enyimba hold their own in the opening 15 minutes against the pouring attack of Zamalek.
In the 18th minute, Ifeanyi Onuigbo got a real scoring chance, but his header was turned out for a corner by hosts’ keeper Ahmed El-Shennawi.
Mostafa Fathi came close for the hosts five minutes from the break, but his effort was blocked by Emma Anyanwu to keep the scoreline goalless at half time.
In the second half, Enyimba conceded a disappointing penalty after defender Chinedu Udoji handled Ayman Hefny’s shot.
Morsy wasted no chance beating keeper Afelokhai from the spot to put the hosts in front in the 63rd minute.
Five minutes later, Abdullah Fathi outran his markers but failed to make his brilliant effort count for the Egyptians as he fired wide from close range.
The Elephants kept hopes alive for a comeback with Chima Akas fired a long range shot on target, but was denied by the cross bar in the 74th minute.
The victory send Zamalek to the second round of the competition with Enyimba’s hopes of progressing dented. Paul Aigbogun’s men Mamelodi Sundowns in their last group game which counts for nothing.
