Following the heartwarming directive by the Governor of Abia State, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, Ph.D that elections be conducted in the seventeen local government council areas and two hundred and ninety-two ABSIEC Wards of Abia State, a directive that has already been streamlined for effective implementation by the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, ABSIEC, the Peoples’ Democratic Party in the state, in a meeting of its State Working Committee today at Umuahia, resolved to participate fully in the election.
The Party commended the state Governor for manifesting enough and uncommon political will to direct that elections be conducted to give the third tier of government its required constitutional legitimacy.
The Party, therefore, among other decisions, resolved to go into the election, which has been scheduled for 17th December, 2016, with strict adherence to democratic rules of engagement, including transparent process of choosing the Party’s candidates, decent and issue-based electioneering campaigns and total discipline during the election proper.
Some committees were set up for the general purpose of the election. They include, Budget Committee headed by the State Financial Secretary of the Party, Chief Jerry Uzosike and Enlightenment and Mobilization Committee, headed by the State Publicity-Secretary, Sir Don Ubani.
The State Working Committee also directed the Party’s Legal Department headed by its Legal Adviser, Barr Ikechukwu Omenihu, to draft and produce Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for both Councillorship and Chairmanship aspirants.
For aspirants for chairmanship, the nomination form is one million naira while two hundred thousand naira is pegged for councillorship aspirants. Both fees are non-refundable.
PDP, being a Political Party known for her gender sensitivity, offers nomination forms for both councillorship and chairmanship free of charge to her female aspirants.
The Party’s time-table for activities associated with the elections will be ready, latest next tomorrow, Friday.
