A notorious and deadly armed robber who was said to have held some communities in Imo State to ransom with his activities, met a gruesome end when he was nabbed by an angry mob who beat him to death.

According to reports, the deceased, Charles Emeka Okonkwo, also known as Fela, was the leader of a gang of dangerous bandits who had been terrorising some communities around the Umuchoko, Agunaze and Ahiazu Mbaise axis of the state, visiting havoc on victims but the day of doom came on Monday, September 19, 2016, when he was overpowered by the mob and killed.

Eyewitnesses say that the 26-year-old Okonkwo sustained various degree of injuries from the angry mob and could not be saved by the police who rushed him to a private hospital in Owerri, the state capital, where he was confirmed dead.

Residents say that Fela’s gang was responsible for multiple robberies and murder cases in the area which saw a prominent businessman, Chigozie Onyenemegam, murdered in front of the Federal High Court in Owerri in June, and that of one Lucky at Umuonyeche in Owerri.

They were also fingered in the murder of another businessman, Goodluck David, who was killed along Oguamanam Street, Owerri.

Other members of his gang still at large are being hunted by the Police.

The Imo State Police Command has urged the general public to report any useful information on the other members of the gang to the nearest Police Station or contact the Imo State control room number on 08034773600.
