THE Umudike community in Ikwuano local government of Abia state on Saturday claimed that they are the rightful owner of the land where Michael okpara University of Agriculture, National Research institute and Abia university extension are situated.

Recalled that Michael okpara University of Agriculture, originally known as federal University of Agriculture, Umudike was established by the federal government of Nigeria via Decree No 48 of November 2, 1992.

The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Joseph Anyaegbu explained that in the year 1921 and 1922 that government acquired 100,000 hectares of land from their fathers and built the School of College, now Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.

He disclosed that there was an agreement with the government and Queen of Land to pay 4 pounds. He said out of the 4 pounds, Amaoba community got six shiellings, Umuokum community got three shellings and Umudike community also got three pounds and one shelling.

The monarch accused the traditional ruler of Amaoba community, King Nkwo Otuwa for trying to instigate problem.

He said the Amaoba community does not have the landmap and the seal of land, challenged them to go to Enugu acavar to ascertain the real owner of the lands.

He said Umudike community had been the one the government was paying till, according to them, Former President Olusegun Obasanjo stopped the payment.

He also claimed that ABSU extension, Government college and the state Timber market lands belonged to Umudike.

Reacting to Anyaegbu claims of land ownership, The Amaoba Ime community in Ikwuano local government of the state claimed that the land where the present Michael Okpara university of Agriculture, Umudike is built belongs to the community and vowed to resist any attempt by neighbouring communities in the area to forcefully take what is due for them.

The community spoke through their traditional ruler of Amaoba Ime community, King Otuwa, the1st, told journalists that Amaoba Ime have been original owners of lands were the school, research institute and Government College Secondary School are situated.


Otuwa also claimed that part of land where the State government relocated the Timber industrial market is owned by the community, and described the claims by Eze Anyaegbu on the ownership of the land as envious and malicious.

He narrated that the record and date are there, when the lands were purchased by the federal government for the establishment of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.

The monarch said three communities contributed land for the establishment of the university, disclosing that Amaoba community has 171.14 hectares of land in the university which is the largest, Amawom community has only 40 hectares and Umudike community has the least, 17 hectares in school.

He revealed that the university has taken more than 200 hectares of land, outside the ones given to them by the Amaoba community.

The royal father alleged that the immediate past administration of the school took more than 200 hectares, two years ago to build hotels and classrooms.

He said his community was never consulted nor paid for the land by the university management, revealed that Amaoba has the largest land donated to School of Agriculture.

The traditional ruler, said over 85% of lands, not including the land taken from his community for agriculture by the university.

He said the land taken from them alone by school was over a thousand hectares that stretches from Amaoba to Ngwa, olokoro and Amaoba ikputu.

Otuwa said the land where the research institute is built, Amaoba community has 99.9%.

He also the land where the present Abia university extension is situated, and the Government college is 100% Amaoba. He said Umudike community has no land around those places.

He disclosed that Amaoba community would sue Umudike community to court to prove that he has the said land documents.
