The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday condemned what it called “state-sponsored terrorism against the Igbo and barbaric attacks going on all over the south-east states in the name of provision of security to the people.
IPOB, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said it is shocking that some Igbo governors will invite the police and army from different formations in the country to invade states in the South East in the name of providing security to the people, without taking time to monitor whether the operatives are actually providing security or extorting money from the people.
The statement read: “IPOB, under the command and leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wishes to condemn the attacks going on all over the southeast states. This state-sponsored terrorism against innocent civilian population is being executed in Imo, Anambra and Abia states.
“It is shocking that some Igbo governors will invite police and army formations to execute their fellow citizens in cold blood because they want to please their Arewa masters that rigged them into office. They extort money by intimidation and in some cases, kill their victims and brand them armed robbers for failing to give them money.
“It is unacceptable that the Army and Police are still attacking and killing innocent and law abiding citizens in Umuahia and Owerri for some weeks despite Amnesty International’s report indicting the governors and the army leadership.”
IPOB alleged that: ”Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and his Imo State counterpart, Rochas Okorocha are the two governors responsible for importing ‘blood-thirsty’ policemen and soldiers from the North to kill our people in cold blood, and warn them to desist from that act or they will be held responsible and accountable for the crimes against humanity.
“This perception that security personnel can come, kill, extort from as many people as possible in our land and get away with it is very damaging to our collective psyche as a people, and we will not accept it any longer.
“Well-meaning people are at a loss to understand how a supposedly democratically elected governors in the south east can allow such a murderous band of blood thirsty men in uniforms to be killing and terrorizing innocent people at will in their respective states, and when IPOB declared no election in all the states of Igboland, starting with Anambra gubernatorial election on November 18, many people may not understand why we are saying that.
“The entire world must be made aware of the fact that governors in the South East are not actually in charge of security matters. Our promise to these collaborators and their Arewa masters is that we, IPOB will continue to push for the restoration of Biafra until we secure independence from this British-created geographical hell-hole in the name of a country.”
Insists on boycott of Anambra guber poll
In a related development, IPOB said yesterday that its resolve to boycott Anambra governorship election on November 18 was irrevocable and in the overall good of Ndigbo.
Calling on Igbo to support the move, the group said that there was no better way to show its disdain of the current situation in the land than to reject plans and policies of the current administration.
Leader of IPOB in Enugu State, Cyprian Okoye, told journalists in Enugu that the group was resolute in the effort to achieve Biafra republic out of the present federation, stressing that it would not succumb to intimidation and threats from various quarters.
He said: “We did not say we want Biafra because of Muhammadu Buhari, we did not also say we want to boycott Anambra election because of him. We have rather said that part of our agitation is to ensure that the proposed election did not hold but those who are feeding fat from the flawed system in Nigeria have decided to misinterprete us. They are entitled to their opinion but we will know who has greater authority and support of the people on November 18. They should keep preparing until that day.”
Asked how they intend to stop the election since they neither control the government nor bear weapons, he said: “We have carried out peaceful protests in the past that shook this nation.
”Yes, government possesses the weapons of war, they possess power to give and take, but the only thing working for us is that we are the conscience of the masses. The people know that we have always told them the truth about this country; they know that their fate has been mortgaged by those they elected to serve; they know that the best thing to do is to discontinue in this project called Nigeria; therefore, if the Anambra election boycott will serve the purpose, they are prepared to make the sacrifice to be free.”
On the approach they intend to adopt to achieve the desire, Okoye said: “We are fully mobilized and ready. Politicians and all those masquerading as leaders in the various places don’t vote on election day. It is the masses that do the voting. I know that if you stay in your house and decide not to come out, no security agent will come there to force you out. That was how the sit -at-home we called in June this year succeeded.”
