The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday held its mega rally in Umuahia, the Abia State capital with a vow to capture not only Abia state but the entire South-East geo-political zone in 2019.
Addressing mammoth crowd at the Umuahia township stadium, National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie Oyegun said President Mohammadu Buhari had done in years of his administration what the PDP could not do for the zone in 16 years, saying Enugu, Port Harcourt and Enugu, Onitsha expressways which were dilapidated for many years were already receiving attention from the present administration.
According to him, the government had embarked on the construction of a standard gauge railway across the nation, an infrastructure critical to the nation’s economic development, insisting that the APC government of Buhari was working hard to rebuild the foundation of the nation, which had been eroded over the years.
The chairman, who said he was satisfied with the turn out at the rally, urged party members to ensure they worked to make President Buhari’s second term bid a reality. He declared that Nigeria had become self-sufficient in rice production because of the agriculture revolution of the federal government, even as electricity generation increased from the 3000 mark to the present 7000mw.
This, he said were indicators that the government of Buhari was on course, urging the people to support him to do more. In his speech, facilitator of the rally and former governor of the state, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu said the rally was the beginning of great things that would happen in the party. Kalu said: “In 2015 we made below 6% but in 2019 we will make 75%. We have come to tell Abians that APC has come to rebuild the state.
When I was governor I paid workers and pensioners. Democracy is about the people. I will do everything to return Abia to APC.”
He, however, encouraged members of the House of Assembly that joined the party not to fear any kind of molestation as the party would stand behind them.
Chairman of the party in the state, while welcoming guests promised to ensure that the state was swept by APC in 2019. He, however, appealed for more federal presence in the state as phenomenal growth of the party in the state which a few years back was like a wilderness was evidence that it would go far in 2019.
