Abia state Teachers under the agis of Nigeria Union of Teachers Abia state Chapter has called off strike to resume Lectures on Monday, 12 February, 2018. According to a statement issued by the state commissioner for information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu made available to Abia Breaking News.
Classes will resume at public primary and secondary schools in Abia State on Monday, 12th February 2018, as members of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have called off the recent industrial action they embarked on.

In reaction, the Principal of Ibeku High School Umuahia, Abia state, Mr.Ojike Kalu Ojike, said; “I am appealing to Parents to release their Children to come to school immediately, because Teaching and learning will start immediately. I believe that the state government in no distant time will clear the arrears of Teachers in Abia, because our Governor is education friendly governor”.
The commissioner for finance, Mr. Obinna Oriaku while fielding questions from newsmen in Umuahia stated that the State Government have met all the demands of the Union in the State and expressed hope that school activities will resume in earnest this week.
Mr. Oriaku stated that the catch-up strategy aimed at bringing the remaining state workers in some parastatals which the State was owing backlog of salaries at par with their MDAs counterparts is working as it has brought the teachers up to speed, placing them at November for primary school and September for secondary school respectively and expressed confidence that every other units who are behind today will come up to speed very soon.
He maintained that pensioners are by no means neglected as the state is also working hard to clear their pension allowance. The commissioner noted that on receipt of all the Paris and bailout funds, the pension union leaders has always been part of the meetings which decided who-gets-what of the funds.
On the independent revenue of the State, the commissioner expressed optimism that with the reform and automation of the tax system which has expunged touting system of collection and multiplicity of agencies and having signed a MoU with a vendor and predicated the benchmark at a very good speed, the State IGR will be shored up soonest to enable government run better than what is obtained and urged Abians to support the Ikpeazu led government for more fruits of good governance.
