The Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Dr Chuku Abali has revealed that the centre is the best in the country in terms of provision of quality health service to Nigerians, irrespective of status.
Dr. Abali made this known after former governor of Abia State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu was examined at FMC, Umuahia who came for routine check.
He also spoke on some challenges facing the centre, noting that it has adequate and experienced medical personnel that can handle any health related issues.
“We’re providing quality service to all Nigerians and we have over 86 consultants in this hospital, spread over 26 disciplines and they’re quite professional in their conduct and I handling patients and we’d expect that those who require that professionalism would patronise the FMC.
“And FMC Umuahia you know is the very first medical centre to provide the very best of care to all Nigerians irrespective of the level or status.
“We have what it takes to diagnose, treat and manage whatever the condition it is. Yes there may be a few challenges and those challenges have been met. You know we need machines in order to drive the healthcare industry, yes there may be a few gaps, but they’ll be filled.
“The federal government has done tremendously well in trying to fill these gaps. There may still be a few challenges and if the government is able to meet up those few challenges, there would be a lot to do in order to tame this tide of medical tourism out of this country” he said.
The CMD also spoke on the kidney transplantation feat the centre achieved and the plans in reaching more milestones and need to equip health facilities across the country in order to end the current trend where Nigerians travel abroad for Medical attention.
“And I want to place on record that this is the only centre in the South East and South South to carry out kidney transplantation and it’s just to buttress what I said earlier.
“Just last week, we did receive a patient with a kidney case from the US to undergo a kidney transplantation here in the FMC. This is what we are all clamouring for, that these hospitals in this country should be equipped in order to be able to reverse the current trend.
“It takes materials, it takes machines, It takes manpower of the relevant skills, and here we have what is called the SAFE PROJECT, (Seek an Area For Excellence) where we encourage all our consultants to seek an area where they can excel. And it’s still within this SAFE project that we have been able to develop our kidney transplant area and also our cardiovascular.
“You will hear more of our cardiovascular surgeries in the coming months because we do plan to expand to cardio thoracic surgery to the point we can do open heart surgeries” the CMD assured.
