The fight against Sickle Cell Anaemia is a fight that should be embraced by all and sundry. It is a global menace, a silent killer. I call it “Silent” because despite the life threatening nature of the disorder, it is highly overlooked. It is this nonchalance that often leads to the event of genetically incompatible individuals getting married and giving birth to Anaemic kids which eventually results in broken homes. Prof. Bernard Odo, a Professor of Geophysics and a Gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the APC in Ebonyi State is the latest additional Ambassador to the Campaign against Sickle Cell.
Prof. Odo has shown beyond reasonable doubt that he indeed has the welfare and well-being of the Ebonyi people at heart. The decision to join in campaign against Sickle Cell is however not a political one, rather it was borne of care, genuine empathy, and as a professor and education expert he understands the position of education and sensitization in the fight against Sickle Cell Disorder.
Prof. Odo who has expressed joy to have been afforded the opportunity to join forces with the Association of People Living with Sickle Cell Disorder APLSCD, in the fight against Sickle Cell Disorder, pledged full support to the cause even as he works in harmony with the founder and Coordinator of the APLSCD,
Mrs. Aisha Edward. Showing proof of his knowledge on the lethal nature of the Sickle Cell Disorder, Professor Odo Confirms that it is one of the major cause of infant mortality in Ebonyi state and also a major cause of failed marriages and broken homes.
The former Secretary to Ebonyi State Government promised that in his capacity he would contribute eminently towards ensuring that a Directorate of Education is set up in the Catholic Diocese of Ebonyi State as is obtainable in alternate South Eastern States dedicated towards teaching and Sensitizing Parishioners, congregants, mothers, youths and all indigenes in general on the importance of genetic education and compatibility.
He opined that Such a Directorate will provide Ebonyi people with knowledge on how to manage and prevent the Sickle Cell Disorder, and how to use the Sickle Scan.A device that allows for accurate, and Spontaneous result of genotype screening.
The ebullient Prof. amongst his many plans towards the campaign against Sickle Cell in Ebonyi State hinted that lasting institutions will be put up in the state, so that genotype education will be taught and its awareness made known to generations to come. Mrs. Aisha Edward expressed happiness, that finally somebody from Ebonyi State, especially a notable figure is lending ‘a listening ear’ as well as ‘a helping hand’ and showing support to the Sickle Cell Campaign.
Mrs Aisha, who before now had taken the Sickle Cell campaign to the Ebonyi State People in School and at grassroot level and Contributed her own little quota, says with people like Professor Bernard Odo in the picture, a great level of success can be achieved in Ebonyi State with regards to the Sickle Cell campaign and genetic education. And in no distant time “Ebonyians” as the people of Ebonyi state are fondly called will become fully aware of the imperative nature of genetic education and ultimately how to manage and prevent Sickle Cell Disorder.
Currently on-going is a training for marriage counsellors on the need to know about genetic education and compatibility and invariably pass that knowledge to prospective couples which no doubt with the help of the erudite geo physics Professor the training will get to Ebonyi State Citizens in general.
