Hours after the news of the reappearance of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu emerged, on Friday, reactions from the public have surged across the internet.
Nnamdi Kanu, who had been missing since September 14, 2017 after the Federal government staged the Operation Python Dance at his hometown, Afaraukwu-Ibekwu, in Umuahi, was reportedly spotted in Jerusalem offering prayers. He later posed with some IPOB members for pictures.
People have given different reactions to the news. While some people received the news in disbelief, others were in haste to assert that “Kanu’s emergence confirms the stance of the Federal government and Orji Uzor Kalu’s assertion that Kanu ran away the country in the heat of the Python Dance.”
Just as majority of Kanu’s supporters have hailed him, his critics affirm it was a show of cowardice for Kanu to have disappeared and left behind a crowd of his supporters, some of whom were murdered or wounded during the Operation Python Dance.
Similarly, some argue that Nnamdi Kanu’s reemergence may not be unconnected to the 2019 General Elections. Recall, Kanu had, together with the IPOB, issued an order to its members and Ndi Igbo, especially those residing in the South East to boycott the 2019 elections unless the Federal government set a date for a Referendum on Biafra secession.
While the public watch the intriguing events as they unfold, Nigerians, and indeed, Umu Igbo in particular, await a formal declaration from the IPOB or Nnamdi Kanu himself.
