Udom’s Intervention: AKSU Secures Full Accreditation for 36 Programs

Following series of interventions from the Akwa Ibom State Government, 36 programs offered by Akwa Ibom State University have been given full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The development was confirmed by the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Eno Ibanga, during the inauguration of the newly elected Student Union Executives and Parliamentarians, at the University campus, Wednesday.

Recall, before the emergence Governor Udom Emmanuel, the NUC had visited the University on several occasions for resource verification and initial accreditation, and threatened bar the University from further admitting students, citing non availability of facilities and manpower as major shortcomings.

In July 2015, all programmes in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences were accredited, while some programs in the Faculty of Agriculture and Engineering got theirs in 2016. Faculties of Education, Arts and Social and Management Sciences were accredited between 2017 and 2018.

As part of the present administration’s resolve to reposition the institution, the State Government recently released the sum of two hundred million naira, to facilitate accreditation of some programs in the faculty of Engineering, Education and Management Sciences.

Also, internal roads at Obio Akpa campus and its adjourning roads have been fixed by the Udom Emmanuel administration, to guarantee free flow of traffic for academic and administrative activities within the Institution.

These and many more can be traced to why the University recorded an unprecedented rise in UTME applicants in 2018, with more than 20,000 vying for admission, double the size of what was obtainable as of 2015.
