The member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has declared that irrespective of party differences with his governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of PDP, he is ready to synergise with the government in taking Bende in particular and Abia in general to greater heights, revealing that he will build a healthy inter-relationship with both the executive and the legislature in the state.
The APC chieftain also extolled what he called the level of the intelligence of governor Ikpeazu, insisting that party differences do not often mean constant confrontation to prove a point.
Addressing ABN TV in Abuja on Wednesday, the newly sworn-in Federal lawmaker said, “Abia belongs to all of us. Like I have always said and others have said that as well, political party is just a vehicle to take you to a destination.
“It’s not a package to create enmity with people. Politics should not be built around if you are in political party A for instance, you should be in enmity with those in political party B. That is not advisable.
“I have nothing against the man sitting there as the governor. I call him my namesake. The day I interacted with him on one-on-one, he impressed me so much; his level of intelligence, the way he was friendly and the ideas he has for Abia. I don’t see the political parties colours at this point because I usually tell the governor that he is my governor and I am representing the people he leads.
“Bende people are under his government and I’m representing them, so there has to be that synergy for development to thrive. I’m his eyes here when it comes to that Federal constituency that is under his government. We are not at war, I am not the governor, he is the governor. I am there to give him help under that federal constituency and Abia as a whole”.
Hon. Benjamin added that each of the eight federal constituencies in the state is there to offer help to the state government and take their constituency projects back home and not outside the state.
He expressed readiness to give the governor a periodic report concerning the projects he embarks upon to secure his support, insisting that both parties are in government under the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The legal practitioner also revealed that he has a good relationship with the state lawmakers from Bende North and South, irrespective of the fact that one belongs to the PDP and the other, APC, describing them as his first eyes in the federal constituency.
He also said the newly elected Speaker, Abia state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji has always had a good relationship with him, describing him as a personal friend.
“I praise him when he is right and I criticise him when he goes wrong. So as a Speaker in the state, I as a federal legislator need to keep that relationship for the growth of our state and not for anybody’s sentimental interest. I want us to grow the state.
“If I see any law they’re making that is not healthy, I will call his attention and he listens to me and I listen to him. That is the truth and it’s the kind of synergy I want us to build.
“Anybody who knows me in Abia State knows I don’t do political enmity. I visit and interact with anyone that invites me whether you are in my party or not. This is what I want to teach the upcoming generation, to see politics in different perspective” he concluded.
