A Port Harcourt based financial expert, Mr. Philemon Asonye Ogbonna, gives a recipe for the rekindling of hope of the South Easterners in the Nigerian project.
His Message Reads;
As the euphoria of the dividends of democracy as exemplified by the events during the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly begins, though gradually, to fizzle out, it is important for the government at the centre to do a review of the outcome with the intention of smoothening the rough edges around our unity as a people that have been thrown up.
The South East could not clinch any principal position in the National Assembly. Some believe it was because the region did not vote massively for the All Progressives Congress, APC while others share the opinion that it was a case of deliberate marginalisation.
Whichever side it is looked at, it remains an incontrovertible fact that one of the responsibilities of government is to create a conducive environment for her citizens. An environment cannot be said to be conducive when there is neglect and disregard for the feelings of the people.
Interestingly the President just said in his broadcast to the nation that he has been revived by the new mandate to rebuild and reposition our country as the heartbeat and reference point for our continent.
In its wisdom, this government deliberately decided to recognise June 12 as democracy day and this singular act endeared a lot of Nigerians, particularly our brothers of the South West extraction to this government.
To further strengthen our unity, the South East can be brought back into the fold of this very large family called Nigeria by benefitting from other sensitive positions that are strictly within the discretion of Mr President to handle.
It may not be out of place for this government to appoint the Secretary of the Federation, a Service Chief and more Ministers from the South East region. Need I say that these have the potency of rekindling the hope of the region in the Nigerian project.
