The Abia State Chapter of the Anambra State Students Association (ASSA) is set to hold their 20 years anniversary. The Anniversary themed “My Culture My Heritage” is set to hold at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, MOUAU Old Matriculation Ground on the 14th of September 2019.
The Vibrant Association with over 10000 members from tertiary institutions spread across the state is set to celebrate 20 years of peace, unity and great foundation from the pioneers of this association. The Association which is widely known in the South-East was formed in 1999 in a bid to unite Anambra Students across Nigeria.
The President of the Abia State Chapter of the Association, Comr. Onyeacho Chukwuebuka while speaking to ABN TV said that
“there’s no better time to celebrate the peace, unity, love built on the solid foundation that our pioneers laid in this great association. It’s also a time to celebrate our culture, heritage and tradition. Not just our tradition, but the Igbo tradition in general. Over the years, I’ve learnt that this association has been promoting the culture and traditions of our fathers. Also, despite being students, the association tries as much as possible to help its members who venture into small-scale businesses with loans, capital and other means of financial aid. We are Igbos, we do not believe in sitting around and waiting for white-collar jobs to come knocking at our door rather we encourage business, talent and skill and support members who venture into business. As an association, we also support our members who venture into politics because we believe that even as young people, we do not and should not be regarded leaders of tomorrow, but as leaders of today because we believe that our future is now, so we encourage members to involve in politics, not as thugs but as youths who seek to change the political and economic situation of the nation for the better. The association also provides scholarships for the brightest students who are not able to afford the tuition fees.
Speaking on their relationship with the Anambra State Government, Comr. Onyeacho said that
“ His Excellency Gov. Willie Obiano as we all know is a man of peace, integrity and immense wisdom. He is also a ‘student-friendly’ Governor which is why whenever we are faced with a challenge as an association or seek his presence or assistance, he always makes himself available and I believe that is what stands him out from other Governors.”
Finally, President encouraged students to know their roots saying that “The Igbo Culture belongs to all of us so we must do what is in our power to not only protect what is left of it but to pass it on to generations to come”
