June 12: Abiola laid foundation of Nigeria’s democracy – Orji Kalu

Former Governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Kalu, has advised the political class and other stakeholders to contribute to nation building through selfless service.

According to the former governor, politics should not be seen as an opportunity for accumulating ill-gotten wealth, but a clarion call to serve the people.

Kalu made these assertions in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The former governor described the acclaimed winner of June 12 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, as a rare gem, whose contributions to the social, economic and political development of Nigeria are indelible in the annals of Nigeria.
The politician stressed that the annulled presidential election is the most credible election in the history of Nigeria, adding that despite a Muslim-Muslim ticket (M.K.O Abiola/Babagana Kingibe), Nigerians regardless of tribal, religious and political differences came out en masse to vote for their preferred candidate.

Kalu said, “as we mark the 25th anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993 presidential election, it is important for Nigerians irrespective of political affiliation to learn from the unforgettable event.
“Despite being of the same religion, the candidature of Abiola and Kingibe was well received across the country.
“Nigerians must bury political sentiments in order to elect credible leaders who are passionate about the country..
“No nation can progress in an atmosphere of civil unrest. We must embrace peaceful co-existence among all ethnic groups.
“As a country, we should take our heterogeneous nature as an added advantage and not a rationale for discord.
The former governor while cautioning politicians against reckless statements, charged government to meet the aspirations of the masses, noting that there is no alternative to good governance in a democratic era.

Kalu also used the opportunity to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for shifting Nigeria’s Democracy day from May 29 to June 12, adding that the national honours to be conferred on the trio of Abiola, Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi is a good development.
