Following an earth tremor that recently hit Elu Amankalu Alayi in Bende local government area of Abia state, the member representing Bende Federal Constituency, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has pledged his commitment to attract relevant government authorities to forestall recurrence, reduce impact, ABN TV reports.
While on an on the spot assessment of tour of the affected areas at the weekend, the federal lawmaker also said steps are being taken to bring to an end the disaster of gully erosion ravaging the area.
The Hon. Member representing the Bende Federal constituency in Abia state, Hon. Benjamin Kalu visited Elu Amankalu Alayi to inspect the gully erosion site in the community on the 5th of October 2019.
ABN TV reports that that the landslide destroyed peoples’ houses, graves, walls, trees, etc.
Hon. Kalu said he is in the affected area to have a first hand information so as to table the needs of the people to the relevant agencies of government especially the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Ecological Management fund in order to get proper solution to the erosion challenges.
He also revealed what next he intends doing in a chat with ABN TV.
“The next step is to engage the relevant stakeholders in regards to managing issues of this nature. Science has taught us that for this kind of tremor to happen, it could be either by reason of the topography of the place, the geology of the place, the morphology of the place, sometimes also hydrology of the place or human activity or combination of all these factors.
“At this point it’s difficult to establish exactly want the cause of this tremor that took away big trees, that took away 4-5km of lands with a depth of almost 100-150 fees that has cracked buildings, that has cracked graves, and the inhabitants of this place, they can no longer go to sleep peacefully at night because they are afraid of waking up in the morning and seeing the land swallowed up” he said.
He stressed that the stakeholders need to be engaged to properly analyse what actually caused the problem and to prevent a recurrence.
He expressed joy that no life was lost as a result of the erosion and also said he cannot wait for people to start dying before the response team will put the management that is expected in place.
As a matter of urgent public importance Hon. Benjamin said if it involves rising a motion at the floor of the national assembly that he would to so as the lives of his people are of importance to him.
Also speaking with ABN TV was the Hon. Member representing Bende North state constituency in the Abia state house of assembly, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu stated that the level of devastation is beyond the state level but that he will do his best to strengthen the will of his motion to the state Executive for the state Emergency management Agency to be strengthened so that their capacity can be improved and they can be ably to urgently intervene within 72 hours in the emergency of this nature while I follow up Hon. Benjamin to bring in (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to come on time to secure further occurrence of this nature.
He also stated that relief materials will be sent to those affected by providing food and other amenities.
